Montgomerie moves to change club contract

Colin Montgomerie is about to change the clubs which have earned him over £3m.

While the Scot, Europe's leading money-winner for the last two years, continued his search for another £361,000 in the Johnnie Walker World Championship in Jamaica yesterday, it was announced in London that he will not be renewing his contract with Wilson when his "lucrative" contract expires in March.

The company was keen to retain Montgomerie, but were unable to agree terms with him. "Colin and Wilson Sporting Goods have helped each other to outstanding success during recent years, and he has been a wonderful ambassador for our products both on and off the course," said Andy Ferguson, the company's business director of golf.

The 31-year-old first signed with Wilson in 1988 when he became "rookie of the year", and improved his position in the Order of Merit every year until finally capturing the money-list title with winnings of £613,000 last season.

This year, he not only became the first player since Sandy Lyle in 1980 to retain the title, but also set a new money record of £762,000. He was also in a play-off for the US Open in June.
