Motor Racing / British Grand Prix: The teams who will be hoping to catch up with the pacesetters

TYRRELL-ILMOR V10

3 Olivier Grouillard (Fr)

Age 33 GP 33 Wins 0

4 Andrea de Cesaris (It)

Age 33 GP 173 Wins 0

THEY still cannot keep Ken Tyrrell down, and the sport is all the better for that. The car has looked quite good, but development has been hampered by lack of cash. De Cesaris, too, charges on, while Grouillard, the original French blockade, continues to exasperate other drivers.

BRABHAM-JUDD V10

7 Eric Van De Poele (Bel)

Age 30 GP 2 Wins 0

8 Damon Hill (GB)

Age 31 GP 0 Wins 0

UNCERTAINTY continues to cloud the future of this once-great team, who have slumped this season. Confronted by debtors, it is scarcely surprising they have been unable to supply the equipment their drivers require to give a reasonable account of themselves.

FOOTWORK-MUGEN HONDA

9 Michele Alboreto (It)

Age 35 GP 161 Wins 5

10 Aguri Suzuki (Jap)

Age 31 GP 34 Wins 0

ONE of the success stories of the season. The former Arrows team have found a compatible engine partner after the failed venture with Porsche last year and the experienced Alboreto has given them splendid leadership on the race and test tracks.

FONDMETAL-FORD V8

14 Andrea Chiesa (Swit)

Age 28 GP 3 Wins 0

15 Gabriele Tarquini (It)

Age 30 GP 32 Wins 0

THE former Osella team has been spruced up and given an air of respectability, and yet . . . . The next part is the hard part, getting the British-built car to deliver the results which the package ought to be capable of delivering.

MARCH-ILMOR V10

16 Karl Wendlinger (Aut)

Age 23 GP 10 Wins 0

17 Paul Belmondo (Fr)

Age 29 GP 3 Wins 0

MARCH, nee Leyton House, are another team suffering the consequences of financial restraint or, in the case of their disgraced former owner, financial excesses. The excellent Wendlinger has at least been able to give a glimpse of his and the car's potential.

DALLARA-FERRARI V12

21 J J Lehto (Fin)

Age 26 GP 31 Wins 0

22 Pierluigi Martini (It)

Age 31 GP 78 Wins 0

SCUDERIA ITALIA, the team who run the Dallaras, keep promising to make a significant step forward but somehow never quite manage to achieve it, even if they have occasionally mustered sufficient performance to embarrass their engine suppliers.

MINARDI-LAMBORGHINI V12

23 Christian Fittipaldi (Bra)

Age 21 GP 7 Wins 0

24 Gianni Morbidelli (It)

Age 24 GP 27 Wins 0

Substitute: Alessandro Zanardi (It)

Age 25 GP 3 Wins 0

ANOTHER of Formula One's nearly teams, they used Ferrari engines without success last season and are still searching for the results with Lamborghini this season. Zanardi replaces Fittipaldi, who was injured in practice for last week's French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.

LIGIER-RENAULT V10

25 Thierry Boutsen (Bel)

Age 34 GP 145 Wins 3

26 Erik Comas (Fr)

Age 28 GP 21 Wins 0

POINTS from the last two races have helped spare the blushes at an organisation which has assumed the role of France's national team, but that still leaves them some way short of Renault's expectations. Comas has consistently upstaged his partner, Boutsen.

VENTURI-LAMBORGHINI V12

29 Bertrand Gachot (Bel)

Age 29 GP 23 Wins 0

30 Ukyo Katayama (Jap)

Age 29 GP 6 Wins 0

THE rescue package put together by the Larrousse operation has meant a confusing change of name, but the signs are that the team is beginning to find its way and could well add to Gachot's solitary point before the season is over.

JORDAN-YAMAHA V12

32 Stefano Modena (It)

Age 29 GP 64 Wins 0

33 Mauricio Gugelmin (Bra)

Age 29 GP 66 Wins 0

THE dazzling new boys of 1991 are the big disappointments of 1992. The switch from Ford customer to Yamaha standard bearer appears to have backfired, but the lessons should serve Eddie Jordan well. Modena, not the most inspirational leader, has been precisely that.

ANDREA MODA-JUDD V10

34 Roberto Moreno (Bra)

Age 33 GP 25 Wins 0

35 Perry McCarthy (GB)

Age 29 GP 0 Wins 0

IT IS just as well McCarthy has a sense of humour. He has barely completed a lap this season, let alone graduate from pre-qualifying. In Canada his engines failed to turn up, in France the entire team failed to turn up. They were trapped in a lorry blockade.
