Al Unser Jnr took pole position for today's IndyCar race at Portland International Raceway, but not until Nigel Mansell made him work for it, writes Toni Toomey. For a time at the beginning of the final qualifying session, Unser Jnr was quickest but Mansell got his Lola- Ford Cosworth on a clear lap, broke the track record and claimed the pole. Though Unser Jnr bettered the old mark on his next flier, it was not enough to overtake Mansell. However, with minutes to go in the session he got it all right, surpassing Mansell's time by a full tenth of a second. Both drivers were a second quicker than the day before.
