Oh to be a Formula 1 mechanic. As if the high pressure of completing a pit-stop in under three seconds wasn't hard enough (ask Lewis Hamilton's pit-crew) cars arrive in the box at 50mph, and sometimes they simply don’t stop.

In a sport that regularly sees speeds top 200mph, that doesn’t seem like a lot. But have a think about the speed cars travel on the open road, and how fast even 30mph can appear when standing on the side of the road as a mere pedestrian.

Two mechanics found life get a little scarier on Sunday in separate incidents at the Spanish Grand Prix at Catalunya. First up, it was McLaren’s entire crew who had a sudden wake-up call when Fernando Alonso arrived with no brakes.

The two-time world champion showed his exceptional skill behind the wheel to somehow negotiate a path through the pit-crew by releasing the locked-brakes enough to let the car turn and miss the 30-strong party ready to service his failing McLaren, and the front jack-man was aware enough to leap out of the way and avoid a potentially nasty accident.

Then it was the turn of the Lotus crew, who were ready for Romain Grosjean to come in for a tyre change after a tricky race that had already seen him collide with his team-mate Pastor Maldonado.

Grosjean misjudged his braking point, arrived with too much speed and clattered into both the front –jack operator and the mechanic ready to remove the front-right wheel.

The scary moment sent the jam-man flying up into the air and backwards about two metres, but thankfully everyone was able to walk away from the incident – though some could be seen to be limping.

There was further embarrassment to come though, as the TV cameras soon returned to the Lotus pit to see the jack-man nursing a minor injury with an ice pack on his private parts. Sir, we feel your pain.

“I’m glad to say that no-one was seriously injured in the pit stop,” Grosjean told the Lotus F1 website. “The rear tyres were experiencing a lot of degradation and I just couldn’t stop in time. It was a really scary moment for me, but probably more scary for the crew. I checked everyone was okay and I certainly owe them some beers!”

The Frenchman was able to recover to finish in eighth position and secure a third straight points finish for Lotus, while Alonso was forced to retire with brake failure.
