Formula E's Lucas di Grassi drives on polar ice cap in world first
The organisation is trying to raise awareness of global warming
A Formula E driver has pulled off a ground-breaking stunt to raise awareness of global warming.
Lucas di Grassi was filmed driving an electric car across the Arctic’s polar ice cap for the very first time.
The video shows the Brazilian completing a number of daring runs in the Schaeffler vehicle across an area of northern Greenland.
Formula E made reference to the expectation that 2016 will be the hottest year on record, with the ice caps melting at “an unprecedented rate”.
The organisation is trying to promote the idea of electric cars as they produce zero emissions.
Di Grassi, 32, was runner-up in the 2015-16 Formula E season, just the second year of its existence as a professional sport.
“To come here and see how huge the ice cap is and how the effect of global warming is changing it, melting it gives me a completely difference understanding of what we are doing with Formula E and the importance of driving electric cars,” he said.
