Michael Schumacher: Mercedes to run '#KeepFightingMichael' on their car throughout Jerez test in support of former world champion
Schumacher continues to fight for his life after suffering a serious head trauma while skiing off-piste in Meribel, France
Mercedes F1 team have revealed a message of support for seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher as he continues to fight for his life having suffered serious brain injuries in a skiing accident last month.
The 2014 Formula 1 season will get underway on Tuesday with the first official test session in Jerez, Spain, and Schumacher’s former team have announced that the will have ‘#KeepFightingMichael’ written on the side of their car for all four days of the allocated event.
Schumacher spent three years with the German manufacturer when he made his comeback from his first retirement in 2010, and hung up his race gloves for good at the end of 2012 when he was replaced by Britian’s Lewis Hamilton.
Schumacher remains in an induced coma after suffering a serious head trauma when he hit his head on a rock in a skiing accident, while on holiday with his friends and family in the exclusive French resort of Meribel.
Should Schumacher recover, a leading brain injury specialist has stressed that an injury of this magnitude will mean that he will not be the same person that he was before.
Dr Richard Greenwood of the University College London Hospital said: “If Schumacher survives, he will not be Schumacher.
“He will be [Joe] Bloggs. His rehabilitation will only be effective if he comes to terms with being Bloggs.
“That is a very, very hard process to take people through. They need to come to terms with their limitations — the fact they have changed.”
