Casey Stoner topped the practice times in Valencia

World champion Casey Stoner topped the practice times in Valencia as the sport returned to action in a sombre mood following the death of Marco Simoncelli in Malaysia two weeks ago.

The field of riders all carried various tributes to the Italian at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo yesterday, with many carrying his racing No 58 on their leathers and helmets.

Stoner led the way on his Repsol Honda with a fastest time of 1min 45.513sec from team-mate Dani Pedrosa. Britain's Cal Crutchlow, ended up 10th fastest, while Hiroshi Aoyama, the sole Gresini rider in Simoncelli's absence, ended the day 14th of 16 riders.
