Alex Ferguson, manager of Manchester United, has agreed to send a full-strength team to Maine Road to play Manchester City on Sunday 5 October for the testimonial of Paul Lake, the former Manchester City midfielder whose career was ended early by injury.

The former Stoke City manager Alan Durban is going back to the Potteries' club as No 2 to the current manager, Chic Bates.

Wolves are confident of beating Sunderland and Brentford to sign striker Jason Roberts, the 19-year-old cousin of Cyrille Regis, after agreeing a pounds 200,000 fee with the Vauxhall Conference club Hayes.

Birmingham City's long pursuit of Port Vale's Jon McCarthy ended last night when the clubs agreed a pounds 1.5m fee for the Northern Ireland winger. The deal equals Birmingham's record outlay and beats the highest sum received by the Potteries club. McCarthy, once given a free transfer by Hartlepool, cost Vale pounds 450,000 from York two years ago. Another Birmingham target, the Wales midfielder John Robinson, is staying with Charlton after Trevor Francis' pounds 1m bid was rejected.
