Despite sunny skies, a sodden outfield caused another day's play to be the abandoned in the fourth Test between the West Indies and India yesterday. Heavy rain on Friday and Saturday had caused the opening two days of the match to be abandoned.

The Recreation Ground was bathed in sunshine, but a few large sections on the eastern side of the ground were still too wet or muddy to play. The umpires Steve Bucknor, of Jamaica, and B C Cooray, of Sri Lanka, inspected the ground foru times before announcing in mid-afternoon that no play would be possible.

The West Indies are 1-0 up in the five-match series after their 38-run victory in Bridgetown, Barbados last Monday.
