Scottish Television has ditched plans for live coverage of Rangers' next Champions' League match against Grasshopper Zurich in favour of Manchester United v Juventus on Wednesday 20 November. Highlights of the Rangers match will be shown later.

Derby County last night agreed to allow Wolves to "hire" Robin van der Laan, who has been on loan at Molineux. The Dutch midfielder will stay with Wolves until the new year, and a "rental" charge of pounds 50,000 will be deducted from Derby's asking price of pounds 800,000 if the transfer becomes permanent.

Scotland have lost three players from their squad for Saturday's European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Sweden at Tannadice Park, Dundee: Greg Shields (Rangers), Andy Gray (Leeds) and Stuart McCluskey (St Johnstone). No replacements have yet been summoned.

Eddie Lyons, the former Brentford trainer, physiotherapist and assistant manager, has died aged 76 after a long illness. He was at the Second Division club for 30 years from 1955 to 1985.

Swindon will tomorrow sign the midfielder Peter Holcroft on a free transfer from Everton, subject to a medical.

Fifa, football's world governing body, is considering a complete ban on players passing back to the goalkeeper. At present players are allowed to head or chest the ball back to the keeper.
