Oldcorn's mind set on victory

Andrew Oldcorn won his second European Tour victory yesterday - thanks to advice from the Scottish rugby player, Gavin Hastings. Oldcorn's peace of mind on the final day of the DHL Jersey Open at La Moye after sessions with a psychologist, Dr Richard Cox, who was recommended to him by Hastings.

Oldcorn began the day three shots ahead and closed with a 69 for a 273 total, 15 under par. He finished two shots clear of Scotland's rising star, Dean Robertson, with Sweden's Olle Karlsson and Paul Maloney of Australia one shot further back on 277.

It was a fine performance from Oldcorn, who last won in Cadiz two years ago when he took the Andalucian Masters. "I didn't feel threatened at any stage," Oldcorn said. "I drew on my experience and played solidly from tee to green. I am happy with the way I coped. Working with a psychologist has paid off.

"Dr Cox works with the Scottish rugby team and Gavin Hastings told me to go and see him. This was a good test to try the things we have been working on. I was in control and I enjoyed it. In a pressure situation I kept my composure better than before."

Robertson, a Tour rookie, has made a flying start after gaining his card last year at qualifying school. He collected pounds 33,330 after scoring five birdies, the best of which came at the 190-yard 14th when his two-iron landed two feet from the pin. "This has doubled my money this season and has secured my card for next year. I am so proud of myself," Robertson said.
