ROSA MOTA, the Portuguese marathon runner, will not defend the title she won in Seoul. Mota, 34, who also took bronze at Los Angeles, has had health and fitness problems for some time - she had to drop out of the London Marathon - but was still thought of as her country's best medal hope. She gave no specific reason for her withdrawal, but said she 'was not in the necessary physical condition to live up to expectations.'
