BRITISH disappointment in the men's hockey competition was compounded in Terrassa last night when they were beaten 2-1 by Spain to finish in sixth position, thereby surrendering their right to to play in the Champions Trophy in Malaysia next year.

Xavier Escude scored both Spanish goals, the first from a pass by David Freixa four minutes after half-time and the second from a penalty corner.

Rob Thompson got Britain's reply after Sean Kerly, in probably his last international match, weaved through the Spanish defence five minutes from time.
