THE Games have been lots of things, but they are not cheap, and the people of Barcelona could find themselves paying for them for some time to come, according to Santiago Roldan, chairman of the Barcelona Holding Olimpic, a development company set up by the city council and the government.

The city is in dispute with the government about who should pay for dollars 250m ( pounds 130m) of costs over the budget. The city is already struggling to pay its dollars 1.1bn share of the dollars 9.28bn cost of staging the Games. And as if that is not enough, the 70-80,000 jobs that the Games created will mostly disappear by next week.
