OLYMPICS / Barcelona 1992: Boxing: Wizard Wilson
STEVE WILSON, Britain's light-heavyweight boxer, reached the last 16 by beating the American-Samoan Mikaele Masoe on points.
Wilson, who had not boxed since March because of a hand injury, was just 2-1 ahead after the first round, but then stepped up the pace in the second. He took an 8-2 lead into the third round, in which Masoe threw everything he could at Wilson, who managed to hold on for a 12-8 decision.
Paul Griffin, the Irish featherweight, has been banned for a year, following the incident when he had to be restrained from aconfronting officials after his fight was stopped on doctor's orders in the second round.
