PETER RICHARDSON, 22, from Middlesbrough, who was sponsored by local firms to aid his preparation, survived a cut eye to reach the boxing light- welterweight quarter-finals last night, outclassing the Mongolian Nyamaa Altankhuyag, 21-4 on points.

However, Adrian Dodson, regarded as Britain's brightest hope for gold, went out in the last 16 of the welterweights when he was beaten 7-6 by Francisc Vastag of Romania. And Paul Ingle of Scarborough just failed to reach the flyweight quarter-finals, losing 13-12 on points to North Korea's Chol Choi.
