GERMANY made a clean sweep of gold, silver and bronze in the individual dressage, which was not a great surprise as the three medallists had teamed up to win the team gold two days earlier.

The day belonged to Nicole Uphoff, who won the individual title for the second time with a flawless performance on Rembrandt. So good were they that Isabell Werth, on Gigolo, was a full 75 points behind. Bronze went to a policeman, Klaus Balkenhol, who actually used to ride his horse, Goldstern, on the beat.

Uphoff was less sure-footed on two legs. She tripped as she stepped up to collect her medal, and almost fell flat on her face.
