Spain's men's were eliminated from the Olympics last night after losing their second group game, 1-0 to Honduras in Newcastle. Despite fielding three members of their victorious Euro 2012 squad they can no longer qualify from Group D.
The only goal last night came when Jerry Bengtson leaped above Jordi Alba to head in Roger Espinoza's cross after just seven minutes. Espinoza hit the post with a header early in the second half and it was not until late that Spain mounted serious pressure. Adrian, Rodrigo and Iker Muniain all hit the woodwork, and they could have had a penalty for a late foul on Rodrigo, but Spain could not find the goal they needed to stay in the competition.
Japan, who beat Spain in their first game, qualified for the quarter-finals yesterday with a 1-0 defeat of Morocco, the only goal coming from Kensuke Nagai. His clever chip with six minutes left from Hiroshi Kiyotake's pass leaves Japan on top of the group.
Senegal are only behind GB on goals scored in Group A after a 2-0 victory over Uruguay at Wembley. The Copa America champions, who beat the United Arab Emirates in their first game, were deservedly beaten by two goals from Moussa Konate. The second came after Senegal had been reduced to 10 men: Abdoulaye Ba was sent off for fouling Luis Suarez.
Egypt will need to beat Belarus on Wednesday if they are to qualify for the last eight after their 1-1 draw with New Zealand at Old Trafford yesterday. Later last night, South Korea beat Switzerland 2-1.
Team GB women face Brazil at Wembley tomorrow having secured qualification for the quarter-finals after their 3-0 defeat of Cameroon on Saturday. Victory will ensure Britain win Group E and have an easier quarter-final.
