Britain's Anthony Ogogo beat the world No 1 and world amateur champion Ievgen Khytrov from Ukraine in a truly outstanding middleweight final 16 contest at the ExCel yesterday afternoon.

Ogogo narrowly won rounds one and two but at the end of the final round the scores were identical at 18-18 and that meant the decision went to countback, but again the scores were even at 52-52. This is called double countback and on the rare occasions it happens the five judges cast their vote, which they did in Ogogo's favour.

However, the Ukrainian team immediately lodged an official complaint and now the scoring and, inevitably, the result will be analysed by members from AIBA. A similar complaint was made on Wednesday by the Japanese after one of their boxers lost a controversial decision, and the appeal was upheld and the decision overturned.

Ogogo was brilliant in all three rounds while Khytrov thought he was in for an easy afternoon and was far too relaxed. Ogogo, whose mother has been in hospital since before his first contest last Saturday, was exhausted at the end, but Khytrov's last rally was not enough for the five judges. Hopefully, it will not be enough for the wise men and women from AIBA who will now sit in judgement.

Great Britain's Josh Taylor, who beat Brazil's Robson Conceicao in the first round, was due to face Domenico Valentino of Italy last night.
