Women's tennis final - Everything you need to know

When is it?

The women’s singles final will be held on Saturday 13 August 2016.

What time will it be on?

The match will start at around 4pm BST (12pm local time in Rio).

Where can I watch it live?

BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Four, the BBC red button and the BBC Sport website will have live coverage of all events at Rio 2016.

Who are the contenders?

At the top of her game after winning her second Wimbledon title in a row, Serena Williams will be back defending her 2012 Olympic gold medal. She is currently the world number 1 and has won 22 Grand Slams.

It’s expected she will come up against the likes of Germany’s Angelique Kerber or Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.

Maria Sharapova, who came second to Williams in 2012, will noticeably be absent from the games this year after a 2 year ban from the International Tennis Federation following a substance abuse scandal.

Remember when…

At the 2012 Games, Williams did a celebration dance when she won the Olympic gold against Sharapova.

She blasted controversial claims from the likes of Fox Sports that she had performed a “crip walk” (associated with black ghetto culture), saying she didn’t even know the dance had a name.
