Jeremy Wariner anchored the U.S. team to victory in the men's 4x400-meter relay in an Olympic record.

LaShawn Merritt, the 400-meter champion, 400-meter hurdles gold medalist Angelo Taylor, David Neville and Wariner finished in 2 minutes, 55.39 seconds in Saturday's final, adding to the gold medal in the U.S. women won in the 4x400 relays.

Bahamas took silver at 2:58.03, edging bronze medalist Russia in 2:58.06.

It was the seventh consecutive Olympics the Americans have crossed the line first in this event, although the Sydney 2000 champion team was stripped of the gold medal for a doping violation.

For the women, Sanya Richards surged past her Russian rival in the final few metres to win the gold medal.

Richards teamed up with Mary Wineberg, Allyson Felix and Monique Henderson to win in a time of three minutes 18.54 seconds.

Russia finished second in 3:18.82 after Anastasia Kapachinskaya started the last leg with a handy lead over Richards.

Jamaica won the bronze medal in 3:20.40.

The four-laps relays were important medals for the United States after both the men's and women's 4x100-meter relay teams were eliminated in the heats.

For Great Britain, the men came fourth in a time of 2:58.81 while the women finished in 3:22.68, placing them in fifth.
