THE Henry Cecil-trained Epagris is as short as 12-1 favourite for next year's 1,000 Guineas after a breathtaking debut success at Newmarket on Saturday. The filly quickened decisively in the closing stages of the Alington Maiden Stakes to establish a winning margin that was officially 10 lengths but looked a lot more.

From the family of Tromos, Tyrnavos and Tachypous, she greatly impressed her rider, Willie Ryan. 'This is a proper horse,' he said. 'She is very relaxed in her work and we weren't sure how good she was. But she's shown she's got a nice cruising speed.' Cecil said: 'That was exciting and gives us something to look forward to. She'll probably have one more race this season.'
