Mantovani sprang a 20-1 surprise in the Group One Heinz 57 Phoenix Stakes at Leopardstown yesterday. A maiden winner over course and distance for trainer Jim Bolger and his wife, Jackie, in whose colours he runs, Mantovani showed decisive acceleration two furlongs out to dominate the closing stages of the race for his jockey, 25-year-old Conor Everard.

After John Reid's mount, Ocean Ridge, and the 11-8 favourite, Verglas, had flattered from halfway, Mantovani burst through on the far rail to take control and at the line had opened up a two-length advantage over the Mick Channon-trained Muchea, who encountered traffic problems and looked an unlucky loser. Verglas was a head away in third.

Anabaa, winner of the July Cup at Newmarket, easily won the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville yesterday.

Freddie Head, his rider, hardly had to move on the 1-2 favourite in the closing stages of the pounds 66,000, six-furlong-110 yard contest. Breezing into the lead a furlong out Anabaa beat Miesque's Son by one and a half lengths with Danehill Dancer a head away in third. Iktamal was fourth, Blue Duster fifth and Young Ern seventh. Easy Dollar was eighth of the nine starters.
