THE FUTURE of beleaguered Newcastle racecourse looks much brighter after yesterday's announcement that Stan Clarke, the chairman of Uttoxeter, has offered pounds 3.4m for the track. The offer has the unanimous backing of the Gosforth Park board.

Since another of Clarke's companies, St Modwen, took over Uttoxeter in December 1988, the amenities and prize money there have been improved beyond recognition. And Clarke's statement yesterday that: 'The intention of Northern Racing and its directors is to apply the same racing and business principles to Gosforth Park as those introduced at Uttoxeter,' will be welcomed by racing enthusiasts.
