STAR RAGE equalled the 20th-century record for handicap wins in a season when he scored at Beverley yesterday, his ninth success this year.

Mark Johnston's gelding dug deep for victory in the Charles Elsey Memorial Trophy, edging out Thunderheart by a head, in his 20th race of the year and second appearance in 24 hours, following a narrow defeat at Bath on Monday.

Star Rage shares the record with the sprinters Chaplins Club, who gained nine handicap wins in 1985 and 1988, and Glencroft, who achieved the same feat in 1988. His owner David Abell said: 'He will have another break now - there's nothing suitable for a couple of weeks - and then go for the record.'
