Racing: Record whitewash

JOHN WHITE, the Wendover trainer who heads the early-season National Hunt table with 19 successes, endured a disastrous day at Plumpton yesterday. White drew a blank in all six races, which is hardly unusual except that he had announced beforehand that he had reserved six horses for that day in order to become, along with Adrian Maguire, the first trainer-jockey combination to clean up in every race at one meeting.

White's representative in the opening race, the even- money favourite Days Of Thunder, fell at the final flight when already beaten behind 33-1 winner St John's Hill. Although Maguire recovered to ride in the later races, he managed no better than second, on Swedish Invader in the juvenile hurdle and on So Discreet in a novice chase.

At the same course on Bank Holiday Monday, Maguire rode the first five winners, three of which were trained by White.
