ALL five jockeys in the fifth race at Hexham yesterday were fined pounds 100 for taking the wrong course. The confusion started after the field had jumped only one of the 12 fences in the two-mile handicap chase.

Each horse went the wrong side of a set of rails, running on to the hurdles course. After about 50 yards, Kenny Johnson (Spree Cross), Lorcan Wyer (Chain Shot), Richard Guest (Wild Atlantic), Peter Waggott (Direct Interest) and amateur Sue Nichol (Impany) realised the mistake.

They pulled up their mounts and took them back to continue on the correct course. Spree Cross went on to win by one-and-a-half lengths from 8-11 favourite Chain Shot. The five riders were interviewed by stewards at the end of the meeting and were unhappy about the punishment.
