THE first horse to race under sponsorship comes under orders at Haydock tomorrow when the gelding Takenhall will carry the logo of Langan's restaurants. Within a week of the launch of the British Horseracing Board's sponsorship framework, Craig Pearman, the horse's owner, and Martin Fetherston- Godley, his trainer, have agreed a deal for two horses.

Pearman has persuaded Langan's to sponsor Takenhall and stablemate Royale Figurine until the end of next season, provided the pair obtain the right results. 'It is a sponsorship that is logical and should work because at every meeting there are by and large six happy people who may want to go out and celebrate,' explained Pearman.

'It is performance related. If they do well on the racetrack, Langan's will contribute a reasonable sum towards the training costs.'

The BHB scheme was launched to help owners trade in a businesslike manner and qualify for VAT reductions.
