Middle-distance great Mtoto dies
Wednesday 25 May 2011
Mtoto, one of the most popular Flat horses of his day, has died, aged 28.
Trained by the late Alec Stewart, Mtoto won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and both the Eclipse Stakes and Prince of Wales's Stakes twice. He was perhaps best remembered, however, for his narrow defeat in the 1988 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
At stud, he produced a Derby winner, Shaamit, while another son, Presenting, has given him an enduring legacy over jumps, as grandsire of Denman, Ballabriggs and War Of Attrition.
