Men's champion Oliver Greenall achieved his ambition of beating Ashley Farrant's 2004 record of 54 winners with a double here in Devon on Saturday.
Yorkshire trainer David Easterby took six horses on a first visit to the traditonal final meeting of the season with the intention of running only three depending on the ground.
Starting at a generous 3-1 and blinkered for the first time, Special Order, Greenall's first ride of the afternoon, survived a bad mistake at the final fence before winning the restricted comfortably to put the 20-year-old on the 55-winner mark for the season.
Greenall then followed up on North Island who had to work harder than expected to land odds of 1-2 in the men's open, but his memorable day ended on a sad note when his only other ride, George The Grey in the intermediate race, broke a leg after falling at the third last when still in contention.
Ladies' champion Polly Gundry, who needed just one winner to equal Polly Curling's 1995 record of 40, never looked likely to reach that landmark and was unplaced on all her four rides.Reuse content
