Stan Hey: 6-5 Against
Roethlisberger makes Steelers a steal for Bowl
Saturday 16 October 2010
Barely a quarter of the way into the NFL season, not one of the 32 teams has maintained undefeated status, which means that either mediocrity is afoot or that the NFL Commissioners have hit perfect pitch in rebalancing the league's strength through the draft system and the playing schedules.
Only the Carolina Panthers, the San Francisco 49ers and the Buffalo Bills remain winless.
All this equality has punters puzzled, as they find themselves pushed to name the winners of the eight divisions, let alone the Super Bowl.
Tomorrow's week six games could make matters clearer as the early "springers" – Chicago, Kansas City, Baltimore, the New York Jets and Atlanta (all at four wins, one loss) have chances to move to 5-1 – though only the Bears have a home game. A £10 speculative accumulator on these five pays around £475.
It's time, too, to back the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Super Bowl (£20 win at 10-1, Betfred), now that they have their star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in the team, after a decent 3-1 start without him.
Grisly game of the weekend features Dallas (1-3) at Minnesota (also 1-3) – defeat for the Cowboys could end the tenure of their coach, Wade Phillips, while a Vikings' loss could be terminal for ailing quarterback Brett Favre, now under fire for allegedly "sexting" a female touchline reporter too graphically.
Grisly game over here is the Merseyside Derby – not quite a "six-pointer" (or even a minus-nine-pointer) in the relegation stakes but it will feel like one to the losing team. £10 win Everton, at 6-4 with Stan James.
