THE world champion Juha Kankkunen had regained the lead of the Portuguese Rally yesterday after 15 special stages.

The Finn was five seconds ahead of Italy's Massimo Biasion as the drivers continued to battle their way towards the northern coastal town of Povoa de Varzim in difficult conditions of rain and mist.

Kankkunen had trailed Francois Delecours until the 12th special stage at Lousada when the Frenchman dropped out after his Ford Escort developed engine problems.

Biasion, Delecours's team-mate, stayed on Kankkunen's tail, while Didier Auriol moved into third place after Italy's Andrea Aghini skidded off the road and out of the event during the 13th special stage.
