Rest of British: Who else can lead the world a dance at the Winter Games?: Torvill and Dean - Ice dancing
RAVEL was never the same again. Like the work of so many composers, his Bolero lay unnoticed by the masses until popularised by another form of artistic endeavour. Still he could have endured a worse fate than having Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean thrust his haunting piece to prominence with a performance that was as near perfection as possible in their own field.
That was at the Olympics in Sarajevo 10 years ago. Now, in their mid-thirties, Torvill and Dean are back. They have changed little but their sport has. The move towards artistry and ballet they sparked went too far. Back to the ballroom is the order of today and T and D have attempted to lead the new movement with their 'Let's face the music and dance'. They did not have it quite right in the judges' eyes at the European Championships last month, but won the title on countback. Expect subtle changes.
