Worcestershire moved level on points with Kent at the top of the Sunday League, comfortably beating Somerset by 68 runs at New Road. The hosts, who finished runners-up last season, registered their fifth successive win thanks to a fine all-round display by Graeme Hick.

Hick was the top scorer with 72 out of Worcestershire's 174 for 7 and then weighed in with a Sunday best with the ball of 4 for 21 as Somerset were dismissed for 106.

For their remaining matches Worcestershire have to visit Northamptonshire and entertain Glamorgan, while Kent have to take on their fellow challengers, Lancashire, at home and Warwickshire away.

Essex remain in the hunt, four points behind Kent and Worcestershire, with a 24-run win over Derbyshire thanks to Graham Gooch. After an unbeaten 63 from 52 balls guided Essex to 196 for 7, he took three catches, one a diving effort off his own bowling to get rid of Colin Wells, and finished with 2 for 43.

Derbyshire looked on their way to victory when Kim Barnett and Chris Adams shared an opening stand of 101 but once they were separated, the visitors collapsed dramatically, losing all 10 wickets for just 71 runs.

Glamorgan's chances appear to have gone after their loss to Leicestershire by four wickets. Not that that appeared to be the case when Leicestershire were 132 for 5 in chasing 213, but Ben Smith's unbeaten 78 off 59 balls with five fours and two sixes steered his side home.
