The Canadian sculler Silken Laumann's run of bad luck continued yesterday at Lake Lanier, as she narrowly failed to take the gold medal in the single sculls. Laumann had to settle for silver behind Yekatarina Khodotovich of Belarus, who took control of the race at the half-way mark and held on in the face of constant pressure from Laumann. The Canadian collected a bronze medal while injured in Barcelona, was disqualified from the 1994 world championships final and failed a drug test at the 1995 Pan-American Games after receiving incorrect medical advice.

In the men's sculling event, Swiss Xeno Muller denied the reigning Olympic champion Thomas Lange of Germany a third title. Lange had to settle for the bronze behind Derek Porter of Canada.
