WIGAN quickly ensured that Widnes would not be the team to take away their 100 per cent record. Jason Robinson scored the first of his three tries after 90 seconds and the champions added two more before 20 minutes had elapsed. Dennis Betts also grabbed a hat-trick as Wigan won 46-12.

Castleford lost their perfect record to St Helens, whose wings ran riot. Anthony Sulivan scored a hat-trick, while Alan Hunte went one better in Saints' 47-14 romp. Bobby Goulding kicked seven goals and he also added a drop goal.

Halifax gave Steve Simms, their new coach, a winning start as they also hit the 40 mark against Wakefield Trinity.

Workington gained their first points of the season despite conceding a try to Hull in the first minute. Three tries in 11 minutes guaranteed their 18-8 win.
