PAUL CARR, the Sheffield forward, ended Halifax's faint hopes of the title after scoring two second- half tries in his side's 26-20 win over Halifax.

Halifax have now lost four times in their last five games and trail leaders Warrington by eight points.

Leigh won their first match of the season when they beat St Helens 21-4. Saints were also Leigh's first victims last season, when it took Leigh three months to win a match.

In the Second Division, referee Colin Steele needed a police escort following 11-man Whitehaven's 10-6 defeat by promotion-chasing Dewsbury. Steele dismissed John Routledge and David Lightfoot - both for high tackles.
