Rugby union: Bath enjoy sevens success
Bath became the first club to win the National Sevens titles of England and Wales in the same year when they triumphed emphatically 42-5 against Cardiff at the Arms Park yesterday. Bath had won the Middlesex Sevens in May and apart from a sturdy examination by Bridgend in the semi-finals proved themselves the kings of sevens technique to win yet another title. The triumph was masterminded by their Welsh- born skipper Jon Callard who finished with 49 points from 17 conversions and three tries but the man of the tournament was the finisher Audley Lumsden who ran in two tries in a one- sided final to finish with six overall. Among Bath's international contingent was the Irish wing Simon Geoghegan, who celebrated his debut in the colours of the English League and Cup holders in spectacular fashion with one of the five tries his side scored against Pontypridd, and then another two against Cross Keys in the early rounds of the competition.
