Canada will be fighting to take the third place spot from Italy as they face Romania.

It’s a big game for…

Mihai Macovei. The captain will have to have a big game against the Canadians. Currently, the Romanians have something over the Canadians, having won the last three fixtures between the two sides. The first two fixtures were in the 91 and 95 World Cups, and Macovei will want to lead his team to the first victory over the Canadians in a World Cup.

Teams...

Romania: Catalin Fercu: Madalin Lemnaru, Paula Kinikinilau, Florin Vlaicu, Ionut Botezatu; Michael Wiringi, Florin Surugiu; Mihai Macovei, Viorel Lucaci, Valentin Ursache; Johannes van Heerden, Valentin Poparlan; Paulica Ion, Otar Turashvili, Mihaita Lazar.

Replacements: Andrei Radoi, Andrei Ursache, Alexandru Tarus, Daniel Carpo, Stelian Burcea, Valentin Calafeteanu, Adrian Apostol, Csaba Gal.

Canada: Harry Jones, Jeff Hassler, Ciaran Hearn, Nick Blevins, DTH Van Der Merwe, Nathan Hirayama, Gordon McRorie; Aaron Carpenter, John Moonlight, Jebb Sinclair; Jamie Cudmore, Brett Beukeboom; Dough Wolldridge, Ray Barkwill, Hubert Buydens.

Replacements: Benoit Piffero, Djustice Sears-Duru, Jake Ilnicki, Kyle Gilmour, Nanyak Dala, Phil Mack, Conor Trainor, James Pritchard.

Best stat…

16. This is the number of penalties Romania have scored against Canada in their five match history. In the last three games, the penalty kicks have kept the Romanians in the game and, in the two this decade, have won the game for the men in yellow. Canada have managed to score 13 against the Romanians.

Remember when…

These two sides last faced each other? Canada ended their end of year tour with defeat against Romania in Bucharest. Whilst not a game to remember for the ages, both sides contested hotly, and ultimately, Canadian ill-discipline caused their downfall.

Player to watch…

DTH Van Der Merwe. The Canadian winger has been a shining light for the Maple Leafs. He has scored in all three games and has consistently made the yards against the various opposition. Watch out for this man.
