Round-up: Jonny Wilkinson sinks Glasgow

Hard as they battled, Glasgow were no match for a glittering Toulon side, who sailed into the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup as the winners of pool two after a 15-8 victory powered by Jonny Wilkinson’s boot.

Glasgow’s campaign was always destined to end in disappointment, but Wilkinson’s metronomic kicking, coupled with Exeter’s victory at Cardiff Blues, meant that the Warriors even missed out on the consolation prize of a place in the Amlin Challenge Cup.

Wilkinson kicked two penalties in a tough first half, with Ruaridh Jackson managing only one in reply. After the England hero had added two more penalties in the first 11 minutes of the second half, Gregor Townsend made a raft of changes, but even with Toulon reduced to 14 men when scrum-half Sébastian Tillous-Borde was sent to the sin-bin Glasgow could not make much of an impact.

Wilkinson soon kicked his fifth penalty and Toulon held off the Warriors’ valiant attempts to battle back after Chris Fusaro’s try 17 minutes from the end.

Scrum-half Sébastian Bézy scored the only try as his Toulouse side saw off Zebre 16-6 in Parma to ensure that they finished ahead of Saracens at the top of pool three.

Jean-Marc Doussain converted the try and landed two penalties, with Bézy adding another. Luciano Orquera kicked two penalties for the Italian side.

In the final match in pool five, Montpellier breezed past Benetton Treviso, sharing around four tries as they bade farewell to the tournament with a 24-6 home victory. The South African Tobias Botes kicked two penalties for Treviso.
