Scarlets' fate sealed after heavy defeat

The Scarlets' narrow hopes of qualifying for the latter stages of the Heineken Cup were extinguished yesterday after they lost 37-5 at Perpignan in Pool Five, earning the French side a home quarter-final.

Jérôme Porical, Henry Tuilagi, Farid Sid, Florian Cazenave and Gerrie Britz all scored tries for Perpignan, with Jonathan Davies touching down for Scarlets.

In the dead rubber in Pool Six, Glasgow earned their first away win in the competition for two years with a 23-16 triumph over the Dragons. DTH van der Merwe scored two tries, while Colin Gregor also crossed the line.

Ulster's head coach Brian McLaughlin hailed his side's qualification for the quarter-finals as a "magnificent achievement". The Irish province trashed Aironi 43-6 in Pool Four on Saturday to progress to the latter stages of the competition for the first time since they won the trophy in 1999.

Biarritz also made the last eight, beating Bath 26-19 in Pool Four. "We completed our objective that we set at the start of the game," Biarritz winger Iain Balshaw said. "We knew we had a chance of a home quarter-final and [we] delivered it."
