An assured Australia fan has put a staggering amount of money where his mouth is by placing a £50,000 bet on the Wallabies to win against Scotland.

Michael Cheika's side are firm favorites to beat the Scots in Sunday's Rugby World Cup quarter final at Twickenham and one confident supporter has decided to accept the short odds and bet a staggering sum.

The fan has taken William Hill's 8/1 odds and made the biggest bet the bookermarker has seen during the tournament. If the Wallabies do win, he will walk away with £56,250.

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: "This bet is a gutsy call and we believe that it is the biggest single bet of the tournament so far.

"But more and more people are backing Australia not just to beat Scotland but to win the tournament."

After winning the 'Pool of Death' in emphatic fashion, The Southern Hemisphere side now have their sights set on winning a record-breaking third World Cup. They are second favourites to lift the Webb Elliss Cup on October 31 at 2/1.

Scotland have not even reached the semi finals since 1994, and despite three impressive performances in recent weeks, which saw them secure qualification from a competative pool, Vern Cotter's team are rank outsiders to win their first world title at 125/1.
