As wake-up calls go, coach Andy Robinson is hoping this narrow escape in Invercargill will prove effective for his lackadaisical team. The Scots could and possibly should be staring at World Cup oblivion after so nearly being roundly punished for a disinterested display in their opening game on Saturday.

However, to their credit they saved their best for the last five minutes when it mattered most as Max Evans conjured two moments of inspiration, both finished by wing Simon Danielli.

Kelly Brown, one of few Scottish forwards to emerge with credit, said: "The biggest thing is that we won, but it was a wake-up call. We know there is a huge amount to work on and for 60 minutes we did not play well, but we will take the bonus point.

"The other teams will look at what Romania did and target our scrum and the pick-and-go area. Georgia will put us under pressure up front but it's up to us, as a pack, to respond to that."
