The Six Nations came to a gripping and dramatic finale on Saturday in one of the greatest days of rugby ever seen. 21 tries were scored in three frantic matches Wales, Ireland and England attempted to lay their claim to be crowned the champions of the Northern Hemisphere, with the Irish proving triumphant only after England came within inches of securing the title.

Had England scored six points more than they managed in the 55-35 win over France, they would have won the championship for the first time since 2011. Nevertheless, the English could hold their heads high, having run in a staggering seven tries past the French, though they were able to spoil the party by running in five of their own.

Wales had earlier put the pressure on their two main rivals after overcoming a lacklustre first half against Italy to triumph 61-20 in Rome. A ten-minute hat-trick from George North triggered the landslide of points that saw the Welsh register 47 unanswered points, only for a late Italian consolation from Leonardo Sarto dent their chances of winning a third crown in four years.

It was then over to Ireland, who had to ensure they won against Scotland by at least 21 points in order to overtake their Celtic rivals and move ahead on Super Saturday, They did exactly that, with Sean O’Brien scoring twice in the 40-10 win and Jamie Heaslip pulling off a master-tackle in the dying seconds to dislodge the ball from Stuart Hogg’s grip as the full-back was in the act of scoring – a moment that would prove pivotal just a handful of hours later.
