Saracens' French international stand-off Thomas Castaignÿde underwent surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon in Paris yesterday. The 25-year-old will be in plaster for around six weeks and out of action for at least six months.

Castaignÿde had been due to play for France in last Saturday's Test against Australia, but broke down during the warm-up and left the pitch clutching the ankle that a test last Wednesday had shown to be inflamed.

The French team doctor, Thierry Hermerel, said the utility back had insisted on being allowed to play in the match, which was eventually won by Australia, 18-13.
