A total of 25,000 paying customers attended yesterday's Sunday meeting at Chester. Charles Barnett, the clerk of the course, was "delighted" with the crowd figures.

In Surrey, thunder and lightning, plus a cloudburst, hit Lingfield, which had attracted 5,100 adults and over 2,000 children. The fourth race was run in silence with no racecourse commentary.

The power cut was a local one not just affecting the course. Half an inch of rain fell and the going was changed from good to firm to good to soft.
