Reinhard Schwarzenberger, the Austrian teenager who had never previously qualified for a final jump-off, upset the favourites to win the first part of the prestigious Four Hills ski jumping event in Germany yesterday.

Schwarzenberger, 17, produced a 118-metre second jump at Oberstdorf to beat the first-round leader and Olympic gold medallist, Jens Weissflog of Germany. Weissflog, who reached 118 metres with his first jump, had to settle for third place behind Austria's Andreas Goldberger after slipping to 106.5 metres on his second leap.

The result was enough to keep Goldberger on top of the World Cup standings with 260 points from three events - 94 ahead of his nearest rival, Kazuyoshi Funaki of Japan.
