Skiing: Compagnoni uses conditions as ally
Deborah Compagnoni breezed to an easy victory in a World Cup giant slalom at Veysonnaz, in Switzerland, yesterday, clinching her second win in the event within a week in gradually worsening conditions. The Italian Olympic super-G champion Compagnoni battled strong winds and driving snow to win in a combined time of 2min 29sec. Anita Wachter, the Austrian who leads the overall World Cup, and the French world champion, Carole Merle, and Pernilla Wiberg, the Olympic champion from Sweden, all failed to finish.
