Deborah Compagnoni led an Italian one-two yesterday to become Italy's first women's slalom world champion in front of her home crowd at Sestriere.

The world and Olympic giant slalom champion clocked 1min 43.88sec down the floodlit Kandahar piste. Lara Magoni stormed through from seventh place after the first leg to take the silver medal 1.27sec behind.

Karin Roten, fastest in the first leg of the night-time slalom 0.05 ahead of Compagnoni, failed to deliver Switzerland's first world championship gold medal since 1993, finishing third.

"To win this gold medal in Italy and in front of my home crowd is just incredible," Compagnoni said.
