Smashing time for Arbi

The All-England champion, Poul-Erik Hoyer-Larsen, was beaten by the world No 1, Heryando Arbi, in the semi-finals of the World Championships yesterday, writes James Leigh in Lausanne. The Danish left-hander was beaten 15-10 15-6 by the acrobatic Indonesian and was never able to contain Arbi's famous smash. Later the other leading Dane, Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen, retired injured just when he seemed certain to win the other semi-final, against Korea's Park Sung-Woo. China regained the women's singles title after an interval of four years when the World No 6, Ye Zhaoying, beat her compatriate Han Jingna 11-7 11-0 in the final. Ye had caused the tournament's biggest sensation by beating the Olympic and defending world champion, Susi Susanti, the day before.
